Xbox one chat with xbox 36012/30/2023 Well it's been a while since I switched but the reasons that got me were primarily I was looking to monitor bandwidth usage by host on my LAN (I have roommates and when our internet went to a crawl it was nice to be able to be like "hey _, cut that shit out.") which can be done with certain forks of Tomato, but not DD-WRT (at least the free version). For example, in the next 5 years where IPv6 will become more of a thing (hopefully), they'll be still people without any native IPv6 support which would segregate the entire of XBL if Teredo wasn't used. My educated guess would be that Microsoft future proofed by basing this around Teredo. Party chat is also P2P, and since everyone is still rocking IPv4 (Does anyone have a full IPv6 connection with no IPv4?) there's no need to translate between the two. My question is, is why does party chat use this? Since you've got 2 headers for each packet, each packet will be marginally bigger in size. It gives IPv6 native networks a destination address to route to, which Teredo translates to IPv4 which reaches you. The whole point of Teredo is to enable communications between IPv4/6. So when it reaches your router, it sees it as an IPv4 packet, which it will route through NAT accordingly (as long as it has an entry in the translation table). Regarding the firewall, it doesn't circumvent it. That RFC doesn't define anything to do with native IPv6, it defines Teredo, which it is using compliantly. They're not violating RFC4380, even if you had a native IPv6 connection and you used Teredo, you're just tunneling IPv6 within IPv4 packets. You do realize that a Microsoft employee designed Teredo? Hence so many problems with standard compliant routers." Again, it does that regardless of your ISP supporting IPv6 or not. "Microsoft's Teredo implementation violates RFC 4380, because it doesn't use your ISP's native IPv6 connection but establishes a separate IPv6 connection through Teredo tunneling instead, leveraging your router's firewall in the process. Restructuring a service like Xbox Live takes years, I don't expect anything significant to happen in the near future. There's a lot of work to do for Microsoft that should actually have been done before the Xbox One even came out. The recent service outages show that Xbox Live, in it's current state that is, obviously can't cope with the requirements of the future and even today. Where are they? Those things should have been working before Christmas. Peole getting thrown out of parties for no apparent reason, people being unable to hear my voice while I'm able to hear them perfectly fine and vice versa. I don't even care about parties anymore because they are so frustrating to use on Xbox One. Microsoft had a lot of time to prepare this, but more than one year after launch, party chat and parties in general are still a complete mess. Besides, many routers have Teredo filters that can't even be disabled, for good reason. Microsoft's solution is anything but future-proof. It would have solved the NAT issues many people are having alltogether. Hence so many problems with standard compliant routers.Ī proper IPv6 implementation for IPv6 capable clients would have been the way to go here. Microsoft's Teredo implementation violates RFC 4380, because it doesn't use your ISP's native IPv6 connection but establishes a separate IPv6 connection through Teredo tunneling instead, leveraging your router's firewall in the process. The views of the moderation team do not reflect the view of Microsoft or its subsidiaries.Īnd what's more, Teredo is a potential security risk, which is why so many routers don't let Teredo packages through by default.
